Lancashire Under 14 Schoolgirls
Lancashire Under 14 Girls reached the Final of the English Schools’ Football Association Inter-County Trophy for the SEVENTH successive year and won the ESFA National Trophy for the FIFTH time in those seven years, an incredible achievement!
The Under 14 Girls completed the double by winning the inaugural Northern Counties’ Under 14 Girls’ Championship.
Following thorough selection trials, training and friendly matches, the Management Team of Mike Nadal and Mike Whitworth were able to select the squad of girls destined to win every game they played during the season!!
In the ESFA Trophy the girls showed tremendous character and resilience to achieve narrow victories against Cleveland, Greater Manchester and West Midlands, coming from behind in each game, to reach the ESFA National Final.
In the ESFA Trophy Final at Bet 365 Stadium, the home of Stoke City F.C., the Lancashire Girls, with thorough preparation for the final, saved one their best performances of the season to demolish Kent Schoolgirls 4-0 and gain revenge for the unlucky defeat to Kent the previous season. Tigna Gent scored a superb hat-trick and was presented by ESFA with the match ball. Alyssa Mae-Aherne scored the other goal with a tremendous shot from 30 yards.
In the inaugural Northern Counties’ Championship comfortably beat Cheshire and Merseyside in the league matches before beating Durham Schooolgirls in the NCSFA Final with another fine display of football.
Lancashire Schools’ Football Association would like to thank the girls for representing the county during the past season and we look forward to watching them display their skills either at Under 14 or Under 16 level next season.
Lancashire Under 16 Schoolgirls
Following the trials, the Management Team of Phil Eastwood, Keira Davis and Amy Foxcroft were able to select a strong squad of girls with some girls having played for the county during the previous season at either Under 16 or Under 14 level.
In the Northern Counties’ Championship the Lancashire girls achieved easy victories against West Yorkshire and Merseyside but were made to work harder for the wins against Cheshire and Greater Manchester. With four wins behind them the girls won the NW League to gain entry into the ESFA Trophy.
In the NCSFA Championship semi-final Lancashire competed well to overcome a stubborn Cleveland team before going on to beat Northumberland in the NCSFA Final to win the NCSFA Championship for the SIXTH successive season.
In the English Schools’ F.A. Trophy the Lancashire girls won hard-fought games in the quarter-final at home to Staffordshire and in the semi-final away to Northumberland to reach the final for the fourth time in the last seven years.
In the ESFA Trophy Final at the Bet 365 Stadium, the home of Stoke City F.C., Lancashire narrowly overcame their old adversaries from Essex, with a goal from Mary Collier, to complete the double with nine victories from nine competition games during the season to match the achievements of the Under 14 girls.
Lancashire Schools’ Football Association would like to thank the girls for entertaining us throughout the season with their superb footballing skills. We look forward to watching some of the girls play for Lancashire next season and wish the girls who are leaving school every success in their future lives and careers. We hope that they continue to play football at the highest possible level.
International Honours
Lancashire Schools’ Football Association would like to congratulate Mary Collier, Alyssa Mae-Aherne and Emily Slater on their selection to represent England Under 15 Schoolgirls during Season 2017-2018, a great honour for the girls themselves, their families, their schools and their county.
Mike Nadal.
At the start of the 2010-2011 season, Mike Nadal, who works at the Lancashire Football Association, asked the LSFA Council if he could become the Team Manager of a Lancashire Under 16 Girls’ Team. The LSFA Council accepted Mike’s request with grateful thanks. At the start of the following season, Mike asked if he could also become the Team Manager of a Lancashire Under 14 Girls’ Team. The LSFA Council again accepted Mike’s request with thanks.
Little did the LSFA Council know that they had inherited an absolute genius of girls’ football with Lancashire destined to dominate girls’ football at county level for the foreseeable future. Since Mike Nadal began to manage girls’ football in Lancashire, the following results have been achieved by the Lancashire Under 16 and Under 14 Girls’ Teams (with the names of the goalscorers in brackets where known):

At the end of Season 2017-2018 Mike Nadal decided to step down as Team Manager of the Under 14 Girls’ Team, having previously passed on the role as Team Manager of the Under 16 Girls’ Team to Keira Davis and then to Phil Eastwood.
With the help of Keira, Phil, Michael Whitworth and his other Assistant Managers, Mike Nadal has managed to establish Lancashire County Schools’ F.A. as the absolute leading county in England for girls’ football.
For the record, during the past eight years, the Lancashire Girls’ Under 16 and Under 14 County Teams have the following playing record with a win rate of 81.61%:
Matches played: 87
Matches won: 71
Matches drawn: 9
Matches lost: 7
The bad news for other counties is that the successors to Mike Nadal - Phil Eastwood and Michael Whitworth - have already begun to emulate the success achieved by Mike.
Well done Mike Nadal, you have done Lancashire County SFA proud !!!!!!
Lancashire Under 14 Schoolboys
Lancashire Schools’ F.A. fielded an Under 14 Boys’ County Team for the fourth time. Following the coaching course and county trials, the Management Team of Neil Black, Andy Buckingham and Andy Kelly were able to select a strong squad with plenty of promise for the forthcoming season.
In the first round of the ESFA Trophy Lancashire were easily the better side against Staffordshire but contrived to miss easy goal-scoring opportunities in the first half in particular and defensive mistakes in the second half allowed Staffordshire to win the game.
Having crashed out of the ESFA Trophy the Lancashire boys went on to compete in the inaugural Northern Counties’ Championship. Despite losing their opening game to a strong Merseyside team, the Lancashire boys fought back well to draw with South Yorkshire in a game they should have won comfortably before going on to win comfortably against Cleveland and to beat Greater Manchester in a tremendous game of football in which Lancashire fought back well after going two goals down.
In the NCSFA Final Lancashire again lost out to Merseyside despite competing well but conceded careless goals at crucial times during the final.
Lancashire Schools’ Football Association would like to thank the boys for representing the county during the past season and we look forward to meeting them again during the next two seasons.
Lancashire Under 16 Schoolboys
Following the early July coaching course and trial matches against Bamber Bridge F.C., Blackpool F.C. and Bury F.C., the Management Team of Andy Clitheroe and Stewart Clitheroe were able to select a strong squad for the coming season.
In the English Schools’ F.A. Trophy, the Lancashire boys recorded a tremendous victory away to a strong Durham team, coming from behind to win. Disappointingly Lancashire then lost out on penalties to South Yorkshire in the next round having drawn the game on a uneven, unmaintained and hard grass pitch which was not fit for county football and on which the boys from both sides were unable to display their skills.
In the Northern Counties’ Competition the Lancashire Boys started well with hard-fought victories against Cheshire and Greater Manchester and a draw against West Yorkshire. Despite losing away to Merseyside, Lancashire finished second in the NW league and gained revenge on South Yorkshire by comfortably beating them in the semi-final. In the final Lancashire lost to a good Greater Manchester team but only had themselves to blame by missing countless clear goal-scoring opportunities in the first half
Lancashire Schools’ Football Association would like to thank the boys for representing the county during the past season and wish them every success as they embark on the next stage of their careers.
Lancashire Under 18 Schoolboys
Following the trial and friendly matches against AFC Fylde and Orange Soccer, the new Management Team of Andy Buckingham, Trevor Sinclair and Ray Booth were able to select a squad which looked stronger and more competitive than in previous years.
In the ESFA Trophy the Lancashire Boys, following a relatively comfortable win at home to Cleveland, recorded two tremendous and hard-fought victories against Durham away and Shropshire at home. In both games Lancashire fought back after going behind to record excellent wins and reach the semi-final stage of the trophy. In an excellent semi-final at home to Humberside the Lancashire Boys were very unlucky to lose out by the narrowest of margins after taking the lead with the first Humberside goal something of a fluke when an intended cross flew into the top corner of the net.
In the Northern Counties’ Championship Lancashire recorded excellent victories against Greater Manchester and Merseyside in the league games enabling Lancashire to be drawn at home in the semi-final to Northumberland. The season finished on a disappointing note with defeat to a strong Northumberland team who went on to win the NCSFA Championship by beating Merseyside 2-1 in the final.
Lancashire Schools’ Football Association would like to thank the boys who played for the team during the season. Some of the boys will be available to play again next season and we wish the boys who are leaving their school or college every success in their future lives and careers.
